Volunteer Opportunities

The Hospice Volunteer

Life Choice Hospice Volunteers are members of a dedicated group of loyal and sensitive individuals who selflessly give to help ensure our mission of hospice care is delivered with compassion and care. Committed to excellence, each hospice volunteer has a profound impact on the lives of our patients and their families.

Our Volunteer Training promotes the understanding of death as the end of a person’s physical existence, and the end of their life’s journey comes to a close. In addition to being oriented to the Hospice Philosophy, our hospice volunteer’s are trained to meet the complex challenges that patients and their families face when coping with a life-limiting illness, providing ongoing support and reassurance. Many volunteers have experienced their own loss. This experience often enables the volunteer to be especially supportive to both the patient’s and their family’s needs. Volunteer training will give you the self confidence needed to feel comfortable in the facility setting or in the patient’s home.

Abider Volunteers

Abider volunteers allow the patient to take the lead. Each visit with the patient will be unique, as the needs of the patient change. Abider volunteers provide support to the patient and their family through:

• Listening
• Reading from the patient’s favorite book
• Holding the patient’s hand
• Writing letters
• Playing music
• Watching a television program together

Bereavement Volunteers

Our bereavement volunteers, many of whom have experienced their own loss, offer support to the family and friends of the deceased patient. During the grieving process, the bereavement volunteer is an invaluable resource, especially to those who lack a solid support network.

"No One Dies Alone" Compassionate/Companion Volunteers

A program designed for those patients whose death is imminent. The volunteer would be at the bedside of the patient to:

• Be quietly present
• Pray
• Read
• Play music
• Reminisce

Alternative/Complementary Therapy Volunteers

Our volunteers are certified and/or are professionally trained prior to joining our team. The volunteer provides comfort and relaxation to our patients and their families. A sampling of the Alternative/Complimentary Therapy Volunteers may include:

• Reiki
• Massage
• Reflexology
• Aromatherapy
• Pet Therapy
• Musicians and vocalists

Administrative Volunteers

Although administrative volunteers do not have direct contact with the patient and their family, it is important they understand the “Hospice Philosophy”, as their indirect service supports our direct care. Administrative volunteers support the Life Choice Hospice staff with assembling informational packets, filing, data entry, telephone assistance and performing other various clerical duties.

Send a Wish Volunteers

Wish volunteers are episodic volunteers that enjoy instant gratification! Unable to spend quality time with the patient and their family, they would prefer to fulfill a wish. Our wish volunteers provide small gifts of fresh flowers, dessert treats, a book, music CD or a tranquil picture that brings joy to our patient’s.

Youth Groups

Our youth volunteers bring happiness and hope into our patients’ lives. Many of our groups receive service badges for entertaining the patients with their dance performances, holiday sing-along’s or just assisting someone in need. The types of service our youth groups provide are endless. Most importantly, they put a smile on our patients’ faces.

Arts & Crafts Volunteers

This area of volunteerism is ideal for children, teens, stay at home moms and seniors. Projects are completed in your home or group area, and the hours are flexible. These volunteers create quilts, lap blankets, booties, and themed holiday crafts. The ideas of craftsmanship are endless, and bring an extra touch of comfort to our patients.

Answer the Call

There is a light in the world…a healing spirit more powerful than any darkness we many encounter. We sometimes lose sight of this force where there is suffering and too much pain. Then, suddenly, the spirit will emerge through the lives of ordinary people who hear a call and answer in extraordinary ways.

Should you become a volunteer? If you have as little as an hour per week, our program can give you a truly rewarding experience – one that is appreciated by many. Life Choice is always looking for committed volunteers to become part of our hospice team. If you are interested, please call (800) 557-7570, Ext. 116.
